Decelerating the vehicle after initial collision

In the case of accidents, secondary collisions can often occur after the initial collision because the driver has lost control of the vehicle. This endangers both the vehicle occupants and other road users.

The secondary collision mitigation function is specifically designed for such accidents. In the event of a collision, the airbag control unit forwards this information to the ESP® control unit. ESP® slows down the vehicle through targeted intervention in the brakes or engine, bringing it to a standstill when required. This can help to avoid or reduce the severity of subsequent collisions.

Improved protection in side crashes

Side crashes expose the occupants to the highest risk of injury. A side crash with a tree or pole is particularly dangerous. Important here is to detect the crash risk as quickly as possible and to deploy the side airbags.

The function early pole crash detection networks ESP® and the airbag control unit. If the function recognizes critical lateral motion of the vehicle from the sensor signals of ESP®, it prepares the airbag control unit for a possible side crash. Should this actually occur, the side and head airbags can be triggered much earlier than previously possible, dramatically improving their effectiveness.

Protection when a vehicle overturns

Many crashes with fatal outcome for vehicle occupants are associated with the vehicle overturning.

The function advanced rollover sensing utilizes not only data provided by the rollover sensor in the airbag control unit but also data from ESP®. From the analysis of the vehicle’s state, the airbag control unit recognizes critical driving situations even before a rollover begins. The function can thus provide a reliable and robust triggering decision for belt pretensioners, side and head airbags or rollover bar even earlier than before, giving occupants the best possible protection.
